According to the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), a chimney should be inspected and or cleaned once a year depending on the design of the chimney and on usage-including amount of wood burned, type of wood burned (seasoned or unseasoned).

Sometimes older chimney require a new liner to have your heat turned back on if there is a problem with your furnace.
